What Actually Happens In a Therapy Session

Published: 2024-02-20

A lot of people who’ve never been to therapy picture a couch, a notepad, and someone asking how that made you feel. It’s not really like that, at least not here.

When someone comes in for the first time, we talk. I want to know what brought you in, what life looks like right now, and what you’re hoping changes. That first session is really about both of us getting a feel for each other and figuring out where to start.

From there, sessions run 50 to 60 minutes. Depending on what you’re dealing with, we might use CBT to work through patterns that are driving anxiety or low mood. DBT if emotional regulation is the bigger challenge. If substances are part of the picture, I bring in relapse prevention and motivational interviewing. The approach follows the person.

I see clients in the Bedford and Manchester area, and through telehealth for anyone across New Hampshire, including Concord, Portsmouth, Derry, and Dover. If getting to an office is the thing standing in your way, please don’t let it be.
