What is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)?

Published: 2023-12-28

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is not an easy path. It takes diligence, determination, and will to change. AA has mentors that take on mentees to help keep mentees in line with their goals and working to keep addiction at bay. AA was created over 88 years ago in 1935, and puts a strong emphasis on anonymity. AA puts a stronger emphasis on the 12 step program as highlighted in the Big Book. To keep sobriety at its core, in 1950 AA instituted the twelve traditions (12 steps) to ensure membership for anyone wishing to stop drinking, and asked that memberships be kept anonymous, especially in public media, but when anonymity is broken, no repercussions are prescribed.

“A 2020 scientific review found clinical interventions increasing AA participation via AA twelve step facilitation (AA/TSF) had sustained remission rates 20-60% better than other well-established treatments regardless of demographics.”
